The Greene County Board of Commissioners canceled its scheduled meeting on March 16 due to an anticipated severe weather threat in the area. The next meeting is set for Monday, April 6, at 10:00 AM during the board’s regular session.
The cancellation comes as local officials urge residents to stay alert and follow guidance from public safety authorities throughout the day. Updates from the county will be provided through its website and official social media channels as needed.
While the board addresses immediate concerns related to public safety, recent data shows ongoing challenges in local education. In the 2022-23 school year, only 8.6% of senior students in Greene County school districts who took the science portion of the ACT were considered ready for college, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Among junior students taking the same test, just 7.1% met college readiness benchmarks.
Reading scores showed slightly higher results, with 15.1% of seniors and 12.5% of juniors achieving college readiness on that portion of the ACT according to state data. Math readiness rates mirrored those in science for seniors at 8.6%, while English saw a higher percentage—18.3%—of seniors considered ready for college as reported by state education officials.
These figures highlight ongoing educational needs within Greene County as leaders balance both immediate safety concerns and long-term community development.
