Greene County announced on Apr. 1 that its offices and landfill will be closed on Friday, April 3, in observance of Good Friday. The county said all Trash Convenience Sites will remain open that day, while both the convenience sites and landfill will operate as usual on Saturday, April 4.

The closure affects public access to several county services for one day. Residents are advised to plan accordingly if they need services from the main offices or the landfill during this period.

While operations pause for the holiday, data from local schools highlight ongoing educational challenges in Greene County. Of the senior students who took the science portion of the ACT during the 2022-23 school year, only about 8.6 percent were considered ready for college according to North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Junior students showed a similar rate at roughly 7.1 percent readiness in science.

Reading scores were somewhat higher: approximately 15.1 percent of seniors met college readiness benchmarks in reading, while juniors reached about 12.5 percent according to state education data. In math, just under nine percent of seniors demonstrated college readiness.

English saw slightly better results among seniors with around 18.3 percent meeting readiness standards as reported by state education officials.

The announcement regarding office closures comes as Greene County continues efforts to address academic performance indicators among its high school students.
