Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D., used his social media platform in early October 2025 to criticize the Affordable Care Act (ACA), government spending, and Democratic leadership. Murphy, a Republican representative who has secured victories in four consecutive general elections since 2019, addressed issues related to health insurance premiums and the ongoing federal government shutdown.

On October 1, Murphy commented on rising health insurance costs while referencing a radio appearance: “Listening to @JulieMasonShow1 Just to be clear. The reason for skyrocketing premiums is that the ACA and the PTC are subsidizing the soulless Insurance Industry….”

Later that evening, he addressed House Republicans’ actions regarding government funding and criticized Democrats’ demands during budget negotiations: “House Republicans passed a CLEAN CR! Dems love to make up crisis and this time they are asking for $1.5 TRILLION in handouts to illegal aliens and Insurance companies to open the Government back up. HELL NO! Y’all are all afraid of a BARTENDER!” This message referenced ongoing disputes over continuing resolutions (CR) needed to fund federal operations.

The following morning, Murphy continued his criticism of Democratic leaders’ approach to the shutdown: “The Democrats are shutting down the government and forcing federal employees to go wo pay for two reasons: one, they fear their radical Left Base and two, the want citizens to subsidize ridiculous Insurance Company profits. Period.”

Murphy’s recent statements come amid his sustained electoral success; he won re-election in 2024 against Gheorghe Cormos with 77.4% of the vote. Previous victories include defeating Barbara Gaskins in 2022 with nearly 67%, Daryl Farrow in 2020 with over 63%, and Allen Thomas in a special election in 2019 with about 62%.
