Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D., has announced that he has requested his congressional pay be withheld during the ongoing government shutdown. Murphy stated that no member of Congress should receive pay while the public is affected by what he described as “the Democrats’ willful negligence and political games.”

“We are elected to represent our constituents and put our country before party. Democrats shut down the government by voting against a clean continuing resolution at the same funding levels passed back in March, for political reasons. Their wishlist includes $1.5 trillion in new spending, including giving free healthcare to illegal aliens while destroying Republican efforts to help rural health care for American citizens. Further, they want the American public to subsidize insurance company profits. We simply cannot stand for this nonsense. Yet, as long as the nation must put up with their willful negligence, I will not accept a dime of my salary,” Murphy said.

Murphy, who represents North Carolina’s 3rd congressional district, has a history of electoral victories. In 2024, he won re-election against Gheorghe Cormos with 77.4% of the vote. He also secured wins in previous elections: against Barbara Gaskins in 2022, Daryl Farrow in 2020, and Allen Thomas in 2019.
