Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D., has introduced a resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives urging the United Nations to reclassify China and end its designation as a developing nation. The resolution calls for a shift in how international organizations view China’s economic status.
“For decades, China’s economy has grown to the point that they are now the second largest in the world. This success, coupled with political ambition, continues to fuel its desire for global hegemony,” said Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. “Yet despite its powerful status, it is still classified as a developing nation under multiple treaties and by international organizations, including the United Nations (UN). It is long past due for China to lose its competitive advantage by being characterized this way. It is time for the UN to change this absurd moniker so that China’s status reflects its true position as a global economic leader.”
The current classification allows China access to benefits intended for lower-income countries. These include special development financing, technical expertise, governance support, preferential market access, and extended transition periods for implementing commitments.
China remains the world’s largest exporter of goods and ranks third among purchasers of U.S. exports. According to data from the United States Government Accountability Office covering 2013 through 2022, China invested $679 billion in infrastructure projects across nearly 150 countries and was identified as the top investor in global energy by financing 226 power plants in 64 countries.
Congressman Murphy has consistently secured electoral victories since entering office: In 2024 he defeated Gheorghe Cormos with over 77% of votes; in 2022 he won against Barbara Gaskins with nearly 67%; in 2020 he prevailed over Daryl Farrow with more than 63%; and in 2019 he beat Allen Thomas with almost 62%.
