North Carolina State Representative Gregory F. Murphy emphasized the importance of “free and fair elections” and expressed his support for the SAVE Act, which requires proof of citizenship for federal voter registration and aims to “clean up” voter rolls. Murphy made this statement in an April 10 post on X.
“I voted YES on the SAVE Act to require proof of citizenship to register to vote for federal elections and to clean up our voter rolls,” said Rep. Gregory F. Murphy.
According to a press release, Murphy praised the passage of H.R. 22, known as the SAVE Act, highlighting its significance in safeguarding the security and integrity of federal elections.
“Free and fair elections are fundamental to American democracy,” said Murphy. He added that some local jurisdictions have permitted noncitizens to vote, which he believes undermines American citizens’ voices and potentially invites foreign interference. As a member of the House Administration Committee, Murphy said that he has closely examined this issue and found evidence indicating that noncitizen voting occurs at levels capable of impacting elections. The SAVE Act, he noted, reinforces existing laws by requiring proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration in federal elections and mandates states to remove noncitizens from their voter rolls.
The SAVE Act stipulates that individuals must provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering for federal elections. It prohibits states from processing voter registration applications without such documentation and obliges them to ensure only U.S. citizens are registered while removing noncitizens from voter lists. Additionally, the bill allows private legal action against election officials who fail to enforce these requirements and establishes criminal penalties. Congress.gov reports that the Election Assistance Commission must issue implementation guidance within 10 days.
Murphy is currently serving his third term as the representative for North Carolina’s Third Congressional District. He is a member of several committees including the House Ways and Means Committee and the House Veterans Affairs Committee. Additionally, he co-chairs the House GOP Doctors Caucus. Murphy holds degrees from Davidson College and the University of North Carolina’s School of Medicine and is noted as the only practicing surgeon in Congress, according to House.gov.
