North Carolina State Representative Gregory F. Murphy has announced plans to reintroduce the EDUCATE Act, a legislative proposal aimed at ensuring U.S. medical schools maintain “excellence” without the influence of “race-based policies.” The initiative seeks to prohibit federally funded medical schools from enforcing race-related requirements or beliefs.
“American medical schools are the best in the world and should remain free from discrimination, politicization, and acceptance of anything other than excellence,” said Rep. Gregory F. Murphy. “I’m proud to reintroduce the EDUCATE Act, which bans race-based mandates at medical schools and accrediting institutions.”
According to a press release, Greg Murphy, along with Senator John Kennedy and Congressman Burgess Owens, introduced the EDUCATE Act to restrict funding for institutions that promote certain ideologies or require adherence to specific viewpoints. The bill also targets diversity, equity, and inclusion offices within these institutions.
The legislation directs accreditation agencies to ensure their standards do not endorse such practices while still allowing education on race-related health topics and the collection of demographic data for research purposes. The objective is to separate mandated belief systems from medical education while preserving academic inquiry.
“The EDUCATE Act bans race-based mandates at medical schools, protects the First Amendment and civil rights of students, and promotes objective, science-based medicine,” said Murphy in a press release. He added that excluding individuals based on appearance or beliefs in the name of diversity undermines the integrity of the profession. Murphy emphasized that doctors must be trained to provide high-quality care irrespective of patient demographics.
Murphy is currently serving his fourth term as the representative for North Carolina’s Third Congressional District. He is a member of several committees including the House Ways and Means Committee and the House Veterans Affairs Committee. Additionally, he co-chairs the House GOP Doctors Caucus. Murphy holds degrees from Davidson College and the University of North Carolina’s School of Medicine and is noted as the only practicing surgeon in Congress.
