COUNTY OF PITT: Pitt County Pesticide Collection Day Sets State Record

Pesticides

County of Pitt issued the following announcement on Apr. 14.

The Pitt County Center N.C. Cooperative Extension Office thanks residents who delivered unwanted and unused pesticides during our 2022 Pesticide Collection Day.

As a result of this effort, a total of 22,023 pounds of unwanted pesticides were received and will not reach the Pitt County landfill or pollute our ground water.  A total of 1,585 containers were collected on April 6 and removed from Pitt County to undergo proper disposal.

“This total amount of collected material represents an all-time, recorded high in North Carolina among 100 counties since this program began in 1980,” says Mitch Smith, Agricultural Extension Agent.  Smith continues, “Until yesterday’s collection day, the previous high level in Pitt County was about 9,000 pounds.”

Cooperative Extension extends sincere appreciation to all media outlets who publicized this community outreach effort intended to promote environmental stewardship.

Note:  Pesticide Collection Days are a collaborative effort between the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Pesticide Disposal Assistance Program (PDAP).  These collection days are normally held every two years in counties for the purpose of accepting banned, outdated, and unwanted pesticides. Since the inception of PDAP, more than 2 million pounds of pesticides have been properly collected and disposed of from North Carolina citizens.  Working in partnership with the NC Cooperative Extension Service, the PDAP supervises the collection and disposal of about 140,000 of pesticides each year in North Carolina.
