Pitt County Schools issued the following announcement on May 30.
The Falkland Elementary School Media Center, under the direction of coordinator Mrs. Cecelia Artis Brown, was recently awarded an $82,562.00 grant from the James J. and Mamie Richardson Perkins Trust.
The funds will be used to drastically improve the functionality of the FES Media Center into one that is modern and more educational driven according to Brown, who also noted the importance that the space accommodate both younger and older students.
“We are trying to enhance the culture of the idea of a media center at Falkland Elementary School," Brown said. "As we move forward we are trying to establish the media center as the hub of the school, making it a central location for not just checking out reading materials but to be an extension of classroom learning.
"This grant will provide so many opportunities for not only our students, but our staff to extend on learning. Our long-term goal is to ensure the media center becomes that stop all investors of learning want to seek."
To align with its school mission to provide rigorous and engaging learning experiences that enable students to be creative and collaborative problem solvers in a diverse and ever-changing global society, the goal for the renovated FES Media Center is to be in a position to deliver the tools and resources to both students and staff to meet those needs and succeed.
Brown also noted that the center, striving to be a 21st Century Learning Hub, "will create an environment where students, staff and community members will gain knowledge in cutting edge technology, and innovative learning and collaboration will be a driving force for learning."
