North Carolina State Representative Gregory F. Murphy has expressed approval of law schools ending what he refers to as "DEI theology" and has urged medical schools and organizations such as the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to cease "political practices." Murphy made these remarks in a February 24 post on X.
"Isn't is wonderful that Law Schools are stopping the divisive and discriminatory theology of DEI," said Rep. Gregory F. Murphy. "If only Medical Schools, where lives are at stake, would follow. It is past time for @AAMC , @acgme and others to stop these political practices."
According to Fox News, the American Bar Association (ABA) has voted to suspend its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) standard for law schools. This decision follows actions by the Trump administration aimed at limiting DEI programs across federal agencies. The ABA's council chose to pause enforcement of Rule 206 while it reviews a proposed revision, taking into account recent executive orders targeting DEI initiatives. The move is intended to mitigate legal risks for law schools, given that the Trump administration has threatened funding cuts for institutions maintaining DEI programs. Attorney General Pam Bondi described this development as a victory for merit-based systems.

Murphy has introduced the Embracing Anti-Discrimination, Unbiased Curricula, and Advancing Truth in Education (EDUCATE) Act. This legislative proposal seeks to remove DEI mandates from medical education by stopping federal funding to institutions that enforce specific beliefs or engage in racial discrimination. It also mandates accreditation agencies to prevent DEI-related practices while allowing instruction on race-related health issues and research data collection without endorsing discriminatory practices. The bill is co-sponsored by several lawmakers including Gus Bilirakis, Ralph Norman, Brad Wenstrup, Beth Van Duyne, Andy Harris, Brian Babin, Diana Harshbarger, among others.
Murphy is currently serving his third term as the representative for North Carolina’s Third Congressional District. He is a member of several committees including the House Ways and Means Committee and the House Veterans Affairs Committee. Additionally, he co-chairs the House GOP Doctors Caucus. Murphy holds degrees from Davidson College and the University of North Carolina’s School of Medicine and is noted as the only practicing surgeon in Congress.
