North Carolina State Representative Gregory F. Murphy has expressed concerns regarding the NCAA's policies on transgender participation in sports. In a post dated February 19 on X, Murphy said that if the NCAA fails to "protect women" by allowing "loopholes," it may be necessary to reconsider their "non-profit status."
"Guess if the NCAA is not going to protect Women in sports by allowing loopholes, we need to look at their Non-Profit status," said Rep. Gregory F. Murphy.
Murphy's comments were in response to a report by Fox News featuring Riley Gaines, who raised issues with the NCAA's updated transgender participation policy. Gaines argued that the policy could enable athletes to bypass restrictions by altering their birth certificates and lacks a clear definition of sex, potentially leading to misinterpretation. She highlighted that the policy allows transgender athletes to practice on women's teams and receive benefits without proper oversight.

According to the NCAA, its board of governors revised its participation policy for transgender student-athletes following an executive order from the Trump administration. The updated policy restricts competition in women's sports to athletes assigned female at birth but permits those assigned male at birth to practice with women's teams and receive benefits such as medical care. This policy is applicable to all student-athletes, irrespective of prior eligibility reviews.
Murphy has previously voiced concerns about "biological men" competing against "biological women" in sports, citing potential risks of injuries or fatalities. On August 1, he questioned when this "travesty" would end, referencing a report by The Guardian about Italian boxer Angela Carini withdrawing from a match against Imane Khelif due to gender eligibility issues.
Currently serving his third term as the representative for North Carolina’s Third Congressional District, Murphy is involved in several committees including the House Ways and Means Committee and the House Veterans Affairs Committee. He also co-chairs the House GOP Doctors Caucus. Murphy holds degrees from Davidson College and the University of North Carolina’s School of Medicine and is recognized as the only practicing surgeon in Congress, according to House.gov.
