FARMVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY: Talkin' Tar Heel Book Talk with author Walt Wolfram to be Held February 27

Farmville Public Library recently issued the following announcement.

 Talkin' Tar Heel Book Talk with author Walt Wolfram

When: Mon, January 27, 6:30pm – 7:30pm

Description: 

The public is invited to join Dr. Walt Wolfram for a multimedia presentation on his book Talkin' Tar Heel: How Our Voices Tell the Story of North Carolina. Dr. Wolfram will visit Farmville Public Library on Monday, January 27 at 6:30pm. The evening will highlight the unique regional, social, and ethnic dialects of North Carolina, as well as its major languages, including American Indian languages and Spanish. Drawing on over two decades of research and 3,000 recorded interviews from every corner of the state, the program examines how we speak as a reflection of our past and present. Wolfram uses audio and video recordings and historic illustrations to show how languages and dialects are a fascinating way to understand our state’s rich and diverse cultural heritage. Talkin' Tar Heel was featured on NC Bookwatch and awarded the 2014 North Caroliniana Book Award  The program is free and open to the public. Books will be for sale for $20 cash or check during the program. Or copies may be borrowed from Farmville Public Library.

Walt Wolfram is William C. Friday Distinguished University Professor at NC State University, where he also directs the Language and Life Project. He has pioneered research on social and ethnic dialects since the 1960s and published 23 books and over 300 articles. Wolfram is a fellow of the prestigious American Academy of Arts & Sciences.
