Town of Grifton issued the following announcement on Jul. 10.
Grifton IN PLAY, a nature play initiative, hosted a successful Park Play Day in the nature play area at St. David St. Park on July 10th. A total of 25 children and adults gathered under the shade trees while town volunteers organized simple playground games. Kids solved clues in a scavenger hunt all over the park, then enjoyed playing “hot lava” using the park’s stump walk feature. Kick ball, red light-green light, and a spoon relay challenge kept the 5 to 12 year old participants active. In addition to small prizes, water and popsicles were provided.
Officer Devin Grinder of the Grifton Police stopped by to greet the children, and Hilliard Woolard of the Sheppard Memorial Library Bookmobile shared information about that program’s scheduled stops at St. David St. Park. Also present was Rob Ticknor of OntheOutside who designed and installed the nature play features. Mayor Billy Ray Jackson and Town Commissioners Raymond Oakes and Claude Kennedy attended.
Grifton IN PLAY plans to host a Park Play Day each season.

July Park Play Day: Approximately 15 children and 10 adults participated in this 10 a.m. – 12:30 event. The mayor and two town commissioners were present, and a police officer came by to visit with the children. Mr. Hilliard Woolard who manages the Sheppard Memorial Library Bookmobile came to share information about the Bookmobile and its scheduled stops at St. David Park. Nature Play designer Rob Ticknor and his family dropped by to observe and visit.
Two volunteers organized a series of simple playground games for children ages 5 - 12: scavenger hunt through nature areas, “hot lava walk” through the stump walk area, red light-green light, and kickball. Water, popsicles, and small prizes were distributed. Many of the adults expressed appreciation of the park’s natural beauty, the inventiveness of the nature play area, and the opportunity for children to gather outside for active play. Suggestions for additional outdoor play opportunities in Grifton and in Pitt County were shared among parents. One parent signed up for the volunteer list.
A mid-autumn Park Play Day is in the planning stages.
