General Statement of Duties
Performs field clerical work reading water and electric meters for the Town.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
Employees in this class are responsible for reading water and electric meters on assigned schedule and routes. Work is performed through a combination of walking and riding trucks on the assigned routes. Work is accomplished through the operation of a handheld computer meter reading machine into which the employee must enter the correct meter readings. Occasional public contact is required in answering citizens' questions about meter readings. Employees are subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, and hazards of bothersome animals and work must be performed in various kinds of weather, extreme temperatures, and with exposure to oils, fumes, and other atmospheric conditions. This position is considered a safety sensitive role. Work is performed under the supervision of the Electric Superintendent and is evaluated based on complaint activity, effectiveness of the metering program, and accuracy of readings taken and records made.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
• Reads water and electric meters on assigned route, records meter readings into hand-held computer.
• Cleans meter boxes and reports broken and malfunctioning meters to the proper authority.
• Removes meters for cleaning and testing; tests and reinstalls meters.
• Conducts rechecks of meters when complaints of bills being too high are received; checks for leaks.
• Operates a truck in a safe and efficient manner.
• Inspects and maintains vehicles and submits requests for servicing of the vehicle.
• Processes work orders to cut service on or off.
• Performs office work and places new services in correct place on the routes.
Additional Job Duties
• Explains meter readings to citizens, answers questions of a general nature on meter readings.
• Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Considerable knowledge of street layout and meter locations on assigned routes.
• Some knowledge of the functional operation of meters.
• Some knowledge of utility service policies.
• Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public.
• Ability to work independently within a routine schedule and to walk to cover an assigned route.
• Ability to read and record meter readings accurately and report related conditions.
• Ability to operate handheld meter reading device and drive truck in a safe manner and operate a radio properly.
Physical Requirements
• Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, walking, grasping feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive
• motions.
• Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
• Must possess the visual acuity to operate a handheld computer, read data and figures, and operate a truck safely.
Desirable Education and Experience
Graduation from high school and some experience working with data and figures; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirement
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
