Washington, D.C. — Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D., expressed his strong opposition to H. Res. 1061, the first FY24 government funding package, by voting against it. In a statement following his decision, Congressman Murphy highlighted the challenges faced by physicians caring for Medicare patients.
"For over 20 years, physicians who take care of Medicare patients out of the goodness of their hearts have been pummeled by year after year cuts to their reimbursements," stated Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. He emphasized that the measures included in the funding package to address these cuts were insufficient, attributing blame to Senate Democrats for blocking efforts to fully address physician payments and ultimately impacting medical access for seniors.
Concerned about the implications for healthcare access, Congressman Murphy noted, "Physicians across the country cannot continue to weather constant cuts and are being forced to close their doors. For millions of Americans, particularly those in rural areas, access to quality health care is drying up."
While acknowledging Speaker Johnson's efforts in negotiating the funding deal, Congressman Murphy felt compelled to take a stand against what he sees as obstacles to seniors' healthcare access. "I cannot remain silent as Congress continues to hinder seniors' access to health care. For this reason, I voted against the first government funding package," he concluded.
