Congressman Greg Murphy has expressed his approval following the successful passage of H.R. 22, known as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. This legislation aims to protect the integrity of U.S. federal elections by ensuring that only American citizens participate.
"Free and fair elections are fundamental to American democracy," stated Congressman Murphy. He emphasized the issue of noncitizens being allowed to vote in some local elections, which he believes undermines the voices of American citizens and potentially invites foreign interference. As a member of the House Administration Committee, Murphy has examined the impact of noncitizen voting and concludes that it can influence election outcomes.
The SAVE Act mandates that states verify an individual's U.S. citizenship before allowing them to register to vote in federal elections. States are also tasked with removing noncitizens from their voting rolls, and the legislation provides them with the necessary mechanisms to achieve this.
Murphy has championed the SAVE Act as a needed reinforcement of existing laws to uphold election security and integrity.
