North Carolina families to get $335 one-time payment to help with COVID-19 struggles

Families in North Carolina with at least one child will receive a one-time payment of $335 through a $1.1 billion bill the state Legislature passed.

Checks should arrive by Tuesday, Dec. 15, the state said.

The Coronavirus Relief Act 3.0 funds personal protective equipment, vaccine research, and broadband concerns in rural areas, WITN.com reported on Sept. 7.

It also includes a $50 increase in weekly unemployment benefits.

“I really wish it would be more,” State Rep. Kandie Smith (D-Greenville) told the station. “I’m still praying that we have more to come from the federal level, we’ll see. People need to make sure they have income coming in. They need to make sure that they’re able to feed to their families and take care of bills.”

Critics said it failed to expand Medicaid or provide hazard pay for teachers.

“When we start talking about hazard pay and all that, why would we not take care of those people putting themselves on the line for our most precious commodity, our children?” Smith said, WITN reported.
