North Carolina state Rep. John Bell (R-Greene) is praying for the family of a South Carolina officer who was killed in the line of duty.

"Very sad news," Bell wrote in an Oct. 4 Facebook post. "Our prayers go out to the family and friends of Patrolman Jacob Hancher and the Myrtle Beach Police Department."

Hancher was killed on Oct. 3 after responding to a call for an officer-involved shooting that occurred in south Myrtle Beach, ABC 15 News reported on Oct. 4.

"He was a dedicated public servant, who upheld his oath to protect this community, and made the ultimate sacrifice," Chief of Police for the Myrtle Beach Police Department Amy Prock said, ABC 15 News reported. "He cared about the people that he served, served with, and absolutely loved Myrtle Beach."

Hancher is the first officer killed in the line of duty in Myrtle Beach since 2002, ABC 15 News reported.
