County of Pitt issued the following announcement on Apr. 19.
Pitt County Planning & Development strives to protect the environment by monitoring human interaction within Pitt County’s natural environment by implementing environmental planning programs such as Floodplain Management, Hazard Mitigation, Stormwater Management and Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control.
Earth Day is celebrated annually on April 22 to educate and incentivize businesses, governments and citizens to preserve and protect the environment.
Pitt County Planning & Development staff enforce a variety of ordinances to ensure the protection of sensitive environments during the development process. Pitt County’s Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control Ordinance requires developers to establish measures to prevent sediment and pollutants from leaving the job site and entering waterways or other properties, minimizing the impact of the development. Staff helps administer North Carolina’s Riparian Buffer Protection Program for the Tar-Pamlico and Neuse River basins, which ensures the protection and water quality of many creeks, streams and waterways throughout the county.
Pitt County also maintains a Stormwater Ordinance that requires most new developments to control and treat runoff before it leaves the site, which helps reduce pollutants from reaching more sensitive waterways and preserve the water quality in those areas.
“All of these ordinances and programs are designed to keep developments within the County as environmentally conscious and responsible as possible,” says Thomas Shrader, Pitt County Planner III.
“Our residents win by being able to use the area in productive ways, and the environment wins by being able to sustain itself for future generations. The environment is our home; it nourishes and protects us and therefore, we must try to protect it and maintain its integrity,” says Jonas Hill, Pitt County Planning & Development Assistant Director.
