CITY OF GREENVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT: Greenville Mall Shooting Update

City of Greenville Police Department issued the following announcement on Nov. 27.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. on Friday, November 25, 2022, Greenville Police officers responded to the Greenville Mall for reports of a shooting. Officers located two male victims inside the mall near the area of "American Eagle." The victims have been identified as:

Theodore Devon Dunn, Jr., 21 Irashamire Raashad Perkins, 22

The victims, who are both from Greenville, were transported to ECU Health Medical Center. At last check, Mr. Perkins was still hospitalized and receiving treatment for a gunshot injury. Mr. Dunn’s injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Preliminary information gathered at the scene was corroborated by one of the victim’s own admission that the shooting occurred after he engaged in a fight with an individual with whom he had previous conflicts.  Detectives are continuing to conduct interviews related to the incident and are following up on strong leads.

Fortunately, a GPD officer who was proactively hired by “Belk” to have a presence in their store for Black Friday shopping, heard the shots from his assignment, allowing for an immediate response from law enforcement and no further injuries. The mall employs its own private security and did not hire any off-duty GPD officers on Friday. Chief Sauls plans to meet with mall management next week, as members of the GPD command staff have done on numerous occasions in the past, to address security recommendations for the mall moving forward.

While this appears to have been an isolated incident between individuals who were known to each other, and not an “active shooter” situation, the Greenville Police Department recognizes that thousands of shoppers who were out and about for the holiday weekend were exposed to this unnecessary violence.  We also acknowledge it comes at a time of heightened awareness across the country — with several mass casualty incidents occurring in other states in just the past week. We are grateful there were no further injuries and want to assure the Greenville community we are working around the clock to identify everyone involved.  As an added reassurance, GPD officers have started our annual holiday patrols of retail locations and establishments. As such, you can expect to see an increased police presence when you are out and about.

As always, if you see something suspicious, please SAY something.  The safety of our community is of the utmost importance to us as your local law enforcement agency.

Lastly, we would like to thank the ECU Police Department for their tremendous assistance with the response to the mall yesterday. We greatly value our partnership. We’d also like to applaud the store employees inside the mall, who based on numerous witness accounts, relied on their training and instincts, sheltering patrons in place inside their stores…undoubtedly helping to prevent further injury.

Additional media briefings will take place at a later date, once a suspect is taken into custody. In the meantime, please continue to follow us on social media for any pertinent updates.

We hope everyone is able to enjoy the rest of their holiday weekend.
