Washington, D.C. - Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D.'s legislation to extend the authorities of the Department of Veterans Affairs has passed Congress with a unanimous vote. The legislation aims to ensure that essential services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs can continue uninterrupted.

"I'm grateful my bill that extends the authorities of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to carry out critical services has been approved by Congress," said Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. "Our veterans served this nation honorably and now it's our turn to serve them. Ensuring those who sacrificed so much for our freedom receive the benefits they deserve is one of my top priorities. I look forward to this bill being signed into law by the president."

The legislation focuses on extending three key authorities of the Department of Veterans Affairs. Firstly, it allows physicians and nurses who work for contractors that conduct veterans' compensation and pension exams to practice across state lines. This authority is crucial as it prevents these medical professionals from being required to be licensed in the state where the veteran lives or where the exam will take place. Without this extension, veterans would face increased wait times for these important exams.

Secondly, the legislation continues the VA's authority to restore veterans' GI Bill benefits if they use them at an educational institution that closes or gets decertified from the GI Bill program. This extension provides important support to veterans who may face unforeseen circumstances in their education journey.

Lastly, the legislation ensures the continuation of the Veterans Health Administration's emergency preparedness measures. This includes protecting staff and veterans during public health emergencies, chemical or biological attacks, or other terrorist attacks. The measures also involve providing mental health counseling, tracking pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, and equipment, as well as participating in the National Disaster Medical System to provide aid to other government agencies and the public.

The passage of this legislation highlights the commitment of Congress to support and prioritize the well-being of our veterans. By extending these authorities, Congress is taking a crucial step in ensuring that veterans receive the benefits and services they deserve.

With the unanimous support of Congress, the bill now awaits the president's signature to become law. The passage of this legislation brings hope and reassurance to our veterans that their needs will continue to be met by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
