Washington, D.C. - The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2024 has been passed by Congress and is now awaiting the President's signature. The bill, known as H.R. 2670, received overwhelming support, including a "YES" vote from Rep. Greg Murphy, M.D. of North Carolina's 3rd District.
With an authorized funding of $886.3 billion for national defense discretionary programs, the FY24 NDAA represents a $23 billion increase from the previous year. This significant boost in funding aims to strengthen and modernize the United States' armed forces to effectively counter threats both at home and abroad. Additionally, it seeks to address issues facing servicemembers and combat what Congressman Murphy refers to as the "Biden Administration's woke agenda."
Expressing his support for the bill, Congressman Murphy stated, "I'm proud to have voted in favor of the FY24 NDAA, a very strong bill that was crafted under regular order for the first time in two years under the consideration of all Members. While there were some provisions included that I am adamantly against, such as funding for abortions and transgender treatment, perfect cannot be the enemy of good."
The legislation encompasses several key provisions that align with the goal of bolstering the country's national defense capabilities. Congressman Murphy highlighted some of these provisions, including a 5.2% pay raise for all troops, reforms to assist military spouses, and significant cost savings achieved through the elimination of inefficient programs, obsolete weapon systems, and Pentagon bureaucracy. He emphasized the importance of providing adequate funding to ensure the readiness of the nation's warfighters.
"Global instability under President Biden has made the world a much more dangerous place, and we must fund our warfighters to the fullest. This legislation does just that," Murphy said.
The FY24 NDAA also secures crucial investments for military infrastructure in North Carolina's 3rd District. The following projects have been allocated funding:
- $51.3 million for the 2nd Radio BN Complex, Phase 2
- $66.27 million for the 10th Marines Maintenance and Operations Complex, Camp Lejeune
- $32.89 million for Amphibious Combat Vehicle Shelters, Camp Lejeune
- $45 million for a Corrosion Repair Facility Replacement, Camp Lejeune
- $70 million for a Marine Raider Battalion Operations Facility, Camp Lejeune
- $19.529 million for an Aircraft Maintenance Hangar, Cherry Point
- $45 million for a 2D LAAD Maintenance and Operations Facility, Cherry Point
- $35.15 million for a Maintenance Facility & Marine Air Group HQS, Cherry Point
These military construction initiatives in North Carolina's 3rd District alone total approximately $365.139 million.
The FY24 NDAA addresses a wide range of priorities and challenges faced by the United States, including countering threats from state sponsors of terror and foreign terrorist organizations, fortifying nuclear posture and missile defense systems, and countering Chinese Communist Party aggression. It also provides unprecedented levels of support for Israel and enhances the oversight and accountability of defense operations.
In conclusion, the passage of the FY24 NDAA marks a significant step towards bolstering the nation's defense capabilities and supporting the needs of servicemembers and military families. Congressman Greg Murphy's vote in favor of the bill reflects his commitment to ensuring the readiness and strength of the United States' armed forces in the face of evolving global challenges.
