North Carolina State Representative Gregory F. Murphy has emphasized the need for medical schools to prioritize "cost control" and "Patient Ownership" over "leftist politics." Murphy expressed these views in a post on X dated November 20.

"Long past time that our Medical schools get away from pushing Leftist Politics and start concentrating on educating their students and residents to learn to control costs," said Rep. Gregory F. Murphy. "Stop the incessant tests and referrals. Go back to taking a full history and physical."

Patient ownership, as explained in a study by Kiger et al., published in Academic Medicine in November 2019, refers to the accountability of healthcare providers for patient care. This includes decision-making, understanding medical information, and prioritizing patient needs. As healthcare increasingly involves team-based approaches, ownership underscores shared responsibility while maintaining individual commitment. Factors influencing ownership include logistical systems, personal attributes, and organizational expectations.

The bill is co-sponsored by several representatives including Gus Bilirakis, Ralph Norman, Brad Wenstrup, Beth Van Duyne, Andy Harris, Brian Babin, Diana Harshbarger.
