ECU Health marks the first anniversary of Medicaid expansion in North Carolina, highlighting its impact on local communities. The expansion has provided crucial coverage and financial relief to many residents served by ECU Health.

Former Governor Roy Cooper commented on the milestone, with Dr. Michael Waldrum, CEO of ECU Health and dean of Brody School of Medicine, stating: “One year of Medicaid expansion in North Carolina. As we celebrate this moment. We’re proud to say we’re building the national model for rural health care right here in eastern North Carolina.”

The success of this model relies heavily on Medicaid Expansion and ensuring affordable access to healthcare services.

Kody Kinsley, Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, explained the benefits: “It is a comprehensive health benefit where you can go see a primary care provider, have it covered. Where you can have pharmacy, vision and dental and a copay that is never more than four dollars.”

Dr. Karen Coward from ECU Health emphasized that cost-effective healthcare is just one aspect: “This is the power of Medicaid expansion. It’s not just about providing coverage, it’s about dignity.”

Darcy Guill, an ECU Health patient and Medicaid Expansion beneficiary, shared her personal experience during the event. She recounted losing her health insurance 16 years ago after being unable to work and spending 15 years uninsured or underinsured.

Following a car accident that led to a two-month hospitalization at ECU Health, Guill faced uncertainty about her coverage but found hope through Medicaid Expansion. She expressed gratitude: “It didn’t dawn on me at first that it was going to include me but it did,” she said. “Medicaid is literally saving my life. I am the person that benefitted from it and I am no different than all the other people that could benefit.”
