Patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib) at ECU Health now have access to two new procedures aimed at enhancing stroke prevention. These include a combined procedure that integrates AFib ablation with left atrial appendage (LAA) closure, and the use of the Amulet device for LAA closure.
LAA closure is a technique designed to prevent blood clots from exiting the LAA and entering the bloodstream, which can lead to strokes. This is especially beneficial for patients with nonvalvular AFib as it offers stroke protection without long-term blood thinners.
Traditionally, patients underwent separate procedures for AFib ablation and LAA closure using devices like WATCHMAN or Amulet. The new combined procedure at ECU Health allows both treatments in one session, reducing hospital visits and recovery time.
“From a patient’s perspective, this saves them from having two different procedures,” said Dr. Ghanshyam Shantha, an electrophysiologist at ECU Health. “I’m proud to offer this new procedure at ECU Health, furthering our commitment to improving care and outcomes.”
While the WATCHMAN device has been effective in closing about 95% of LAAs, some patients were not candidates due to unique LAA shapes or sizes. To address this gap, ECU Health now offers the Amulet device.
“The Amulet is a game-changer,” said Dr. Shantha. “Its design allows for complete appendage closure, significantly reducing the risk of leaks and providing improved stroke protection."
Dr. Paul Mahoney emphasized that the addition of the Amulet device enables more personalized treatment based on individual anatomy.
“I am proud to support Drs. Shantha and Mahoney,” stated Dr. John Catanzaro of East Carolina University and ECU Health Medical Center. “Their exceptional work embodies our mission to achieve excellence in academics and clinical practice."
By introducing these advancements, ECU Health aims to improve access to advanced treatments for patients in eastern North Carolina.
“Working together in a multi-disciplinary heart team approach helps us manage complex patients,” said Dr. Mahoney.
