ECU Health has introduced a telecardiology program in Edenton, North Carolina, aiming to enhance access to specialized cardiology care for patients in the Chowan area. This initiative is designed to reduce the need for long-distance travel and minimize wait times for appointments.

Dr. Sivakumar Ardhanari, a cardiologist at ECU Health, emphasized the program's focus on accessibility and convenience: “Our goal is to provide high-quality cardiology care that is both accessible and convenient for our patients.” He added that the program enables real-time patient assessments and evaluations without requiring them to leave their community.

The telecardiology service began its operations with a clinic launched in January. It utilizes advanced telemedicine technology to connect patients at ECU Health Chowan Hospital’s outpatient specialty clinic with Dr. Ardhanari, who is based in Greenville.

During virtual visits, patients undergo standard vital checks and may receive an electrocardiogram (EKG) if necessary. Dr. Ardhanari conducts remote evaluations using audio and video tools along with a digital stethoscope. He collaborates directly with both the patient and attending nurse throughout the examination process. The nurse assists with additional testing as needed, ensuring seamless coordination of care.

Patients can also use MyChart to communicate with their care teams, access test results, and ask follow-up questions. Additionally, two Greenville-based cardiologists—Dr. Christopher Gregory and Dr. Christopher Karkut—offer in-person consultations at ECU Health Chowan Hospital twice weekly.

Dr. John Catanzaro highlighted the growing demand for cardiology services in the region: “The demand for cardiology services in the Chowan area continues to grow, making this program an essential step in expanding patient access.” He noted that ECU Health aims to bridge gaps in specialty care by leveraging technology and clinical expertise.
