A gathering of medical professionals took place on Wednesday at the Eastern Area Health Education Center for the 9th annual ECU Health Quality Improvement Symposium. The event, which included educational sessions, a keynote speaker, and various presentations, focused on quality improvement initiatives from ECU Health and East Carolina University's Health Sciences Campus.
Dr. Michael Waldrum, CEO of ECU Health and dean of the Brody School of Medicine, opened the symposium by sharing his experiences in quality improvement over 35 years. He emphasized the importance of collaboration and caring in achieving quality healthcare. "And in that 35 years, so much has changed, but really so much hasn’t changed. The essence of collaboration and caring and love is the essence of quality," Dr. Waldrum stated.
Dr. David Tillman from Campbell University delivered a keynote speech titled “Rooted in Rural: Enhancing Patient Care and Quality Improvement by Valuing the Rural Context.” His presentation highlighted the need to consider rural contexts in healthcare improvement efforts. “I’m based at Campbell and get to work closely with the communities in eastern North Carolina as do so many of the attendees here,” said Dr. Tillman.
The symposium featured over 40 projects aimed at improving healthcare systems within eastern North Carolina. Awards were given for outstanding podium and poster presentations. Among those recognized was Michelle Ball for her work on standardizing skin antisepsis for hip replacement surgery.
Dr. Jennifer Sutter, physician director of the symposium, spoke about the benefits presenters gain from feedback on their projects. “As a presenter, it can be nerve-wracking to put yourself out there," she noted.
The day concluded with educational sessions led by Erika Taylor and Patricia Huerta focusing on mental health skills for providers, as well as Randy Cobb's session on leading change effectively.
