Congressman Greg Murphy has expressed approval of the Trump Administration's recent decision to impose additional tariffs on China, which includes the suspension of the de minimis privilege. This privilege previously allowed Chinese companies to avoid paying duties on goods valued under $800.

"President Trump is taking bold action to ensure America is not ripped off in our trade relationship with China," stated Congressman Murphy. "I am particularly grateful to see that the de minimis privilege, which allows Chinese companies to avoid paying duties on goods under $800 has been suspended. We must ensure a fair playing field for American businesses to compete and end the abuse of our trade laws."

Under existing regulations, goods worth less than $800 are exempt from duty and taxes if shipped between individuals on the same day. This exemption has enabled many Chinese firms to bypass tariffs on imports below this value threshold.

In response, Congressman Murphy introduced the End China’s De Minimis Abuse Act on January 28th. The proposed legislation aims to terminate the use of this privilege for goods subject to Section 301, 201, and 232 tariffs. It also proposes a new classification requirement within the Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) for all de minimis entries and seeks to enhance penalties for violations.
