Murphy Releases Statement on CCP Money Flowing into UPenn

Washington, D.C. – On May 16, 2023, Rep. Greg Murphy, M.D. released the following statement after reports from Fox News revealed the identity of the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) donors having relationships with both the Chinese Communist Party and Hunter Biden’s business deals.

“On May 16 breaking news that UPenn’s Chinese donors had ties to Hunter Biden and the CCP are not surprising at all,” said Rep. Murphy. “When there is smoke there is fire, which is why I have been committed to exposing the connection between the CCP and institutions of high learning for years. I hope that May 16 breaking news will encourage universities to divest from the CCP and encourage my colleagues to take action in reclaiming our institutions of higher learning.”

BACKGROUND:

  • In June 2022, Congressman Murphy sent a letter to fifteen private colleges and universities with the largest endowments, including UPenn, calling on them to purge their investment portfolios of listed entities - such as Chinese entities - deemed a threat to U.S. national security.
  • In July 2022, Congressman Murphy introduced the Protecting Endowments from Our Adversaries Act to pressure large university endowments to purge their investment portfolios of Chinese entities deemed a threat to U.S. national security.
  • In March 2023, Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith and Congressman Murphy sent a letter to UPenn President Mary Elizabeth Magill regarding the university’s endowment investments in flagged foreign entities and its funding of the Penn Biden Center.
  • In April 2023, Congressman Murphy penned an Op-Ed on China’s influence of our universities titled “The Next Battlefield with China is the College Campus.” That op-ed can be read here.
