Washington, D.C. — On July 11, Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03), introduced the Federal Election Audit Act. This legislation provides federal funds to states who wish to conduct comprehensive post-election audits in an effort to increase transparency and improve election integrity.

"Over the past few election cycles, we’ve witnessed a fundamental decline in the confidence of our elections - on both sides of the political spectrum,”  said Dr. Greg Murphy. “Americans are less sure that elections will be accurately cast and counted. One way to increase election integrity and improve voter confidence is post-election audits. That is, making sure election equipment worked properly and ballots were cast by eligible and qualified voters. In no way should this be a partisan issue.

“My legislation provides federal funding to aid states in conducting rigorous, post-election audits to ensure elections are mechanically sound and taxpayer resources are being used effectively. Financial audits are utilized by successful businesses to assess their operations - our elections should be no different. If the American people can be certain their elections are managed honestly and fairly, we'll increase voter turnout and reduce the need for post-election litigation."

Earlier this year, the House Administration Committee, of which Dr. Murphy is a member, met to continue its examination of "American Confidence in Elections." This iteration of the series focused on "State Tools to Promote Voter Confidence."
