ECU Health has introduced robotic-assisted surgery for pediatric patients in eastern North Carolina, aiming to enhance surgical precision and outcomes while expanding minimally invasive options. This advancement was marked by the recent completion of the health system's first pediatric robotic-assisted cholecystectomy, performed by Dr. Courtney Harris, a pediatric surgeon at ECU Health.

Dr. Harris highlighted the benefits of this technology, stating, “Robotic surgery is still relatively new in pediatric care, and it offers significant advantages for both surgeons and patients.” She emphasized that the technology provides enhanced range of motion and advanced imaging capabilities which contribute to improved surgical outcomes.

The robotic-assisted procedures are designed to mimic open surgery with greater dexterity through wrist-like movements provided by robotic arms. This preserves the advantages of a minimally invasive approach while enhancing precision.

Dr. Harris collaborated with Dr. Shannon Longshore, division chief of pediatric surgery and medical director of the pediatric trauma program at ECU Health Medical Center, to bring this innovative technique to ECU Health. Dr. Longshore remarked on the significance of this development: “Bringing this technology to ECU Health means we can offer our youngest patients the latest advancements in surgical care right here in eastern North Carolina.”

Robotic-assisted surgeries build upon traditional laparoscopic methods by offering increased precision and efficiency, potentially reducing procedure times. The technology also lessens physical strain on surgeons, promoting long-term wellness among physicians.

Tara Stroud, vice president of Women’s and Children’s Services at James and Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital at ECU Health Medical Center, commented on this advancement: “The introduction of pediatric robotic surgery at ECU Health marks a significant step forward in expanding minimally invasive surgical options for children.”

This initiative underscores ECU Health's commitment to advancing pediatric surgical care and ensuring access to high-quality treatments for children within the region.
