North Carolina State Representative Gregory F. Murphy has attributed the resurgence of stoning women in Afghanistan to President Biden's 'hasty and chaotic' withdrawal from the country. He contrasts this with former President Trump's planned withdrawal, which he asserts was designed to limit the Taliban's capacity for harm.
"The direct result of Biden's @POTUS disastrously hasty and chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan," said Rep. Gregory F. Murphy, according to X. "Stoning of women. Trump had a measured planned withdrawal that would have severely restricted the Taliban's ability to wreak havoc."
Following their takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, the Taliban, led by Haibatullah Akhundzada, have reportedly recommitted to severe punishments such as stoning for adultery, with a particular focus on women. According to reports, Akhundzada, who has remained out of public view for a decade, continues to support public floggings and stonings. This leaves women without legal recourse or representation due to the prohibition of female lawyers. A report by NPR indicates that under Taliban rule, women's rights and freedoms have been drastically curtailed.
