North Carolina State Representative Gregory F. Murphy has expressed criticism of the Department of Education, stating that investing "trillions" of dollars into what he describes as a "bureaucratic and political" entity has not yielded positive results. Murphy made these remarks in a post on X dated March 25.
"The greatest tragedy to befall American Education started with the Great Society programs in 1965," said F. Murphy. "They destroyed the nuclear family which is where all education should start. So pouring Trillions of $$ into a bureaucratic and political Dept of Education has done nothing."
According to Murphy, the greatest tragedy in American education began with the Great Society programs initiated in 1965. He believes these programs undermined the "nuclear family" as the foundation of education. In his post, he reiterated his stance that significant financial investments into the Department of Education have been ineffective.

In a related development, former President Donald J. Trump issued an executive order criticizing federal control over education since the establishment of the Department of Education in 1979. The order highlights a decline in student performance, with many students failing to meet proficiency standards in reading and math. Trump criticized the department's bureaucracy despite federal spending exceeding $200 billion during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The executive order proposes closing the Department of Education and transferring educational authority back to individual states while eliminating programs related to "diversity, equity, and inclusion" and gender ideology. It also directs that essential services continue by returning functions to local communities and states. Concerns are raised about the department's management of federal student loan debt and its role in education-related banking functions.
