North Carolina State Rep. Gregory F. Murphy said that the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s report highlights the Biden administration’s "negligence" during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, which "embarrassed America." Murphy made his statement in a September 9 post on X.
"The House Foreign Affairs Committee's report on the failures of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan is damning," said Rep. Gregory F. Murphy. "The Biden-Harris Admin's negligence embarrassed America, emboldened our adversaries, and led to the deaths of 13 U.S. service members."
According to a three-year investigation by House Foreign Affairs Committee Republicans, led by Chairman Michael McCaul, the Biden administration was determined to withdraw from Afghanistan, disregarding the Doha Agreement and allies' concerns. The report concluded that the administration prioritized the withdrawal's appearance over security, failing to plan for a noncombatant evacuation (NEO) until after the Taliban's entry into Kabul. This failure led to the deaths of 13 U.S. servicemembers and weakened U.S. national security, damaged global credibility, and abandoned Afghan allies.

"We are witnessing the largest land invasion in Europe since WWII with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The CCP has become emboldened and more belligerent in their aggression towards Taiwan. And there is a war raging in the Middle East, Mr. Speaker, with the Ayatollah now rearing his ugly head. That didn’t happen by accident. It happened by design with the fall of Afghanistan," said McCaul, according to a press release by the House Foreign Affairs Committee. "When you project weakness on the world stage, this is what you get: a world on fire, inviting aggression from our adversaries. Our U.S. national security is degraded, America’s credibility on the world stage is damaged, and the moral injury to the American veterans and servicemembers is a stain, an ugly stain on this administration’s legacy."
Murphy also spoke of 13 U.S. servicemembers who made the ultimate sacrifice.
"I’ve met with their loved ones, and they live [in] pain every single day, and they wake up to it every single day. These servicemembers who paid with their lives because of this administration’s failure on Aug. 26, 2021. And I for one, in this chamber, in this House say I’m sorry for what your government did to you," Murphy said.
Murphy is currently serving his third term representing North Carolina’s Third Congressional District, which includes significant regions of Eastern North Carolina. He holds key positions on committees including the House Ways and Means Committee, the House Veterans Affairs Committee, and the Committee on House Administration. Additionally, he co-chairs the House GOP Doctors Caucus. With academic honors from Davidson College and the University of North Carolina’s School of Medicine, he is noted as being the sole practicing surgeon among current congressional members.
