North Carolina State Representative Gregory F. Murphy has expressed concerns over the influence of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies in medical schools. He described the DEI agenda as "polluting" these institutions and warned that it could lead to patient harm. Murphy called for those responsible to reverse their stance or "resign." His comments were made in a December 10 post on X.
"The Progressive Leftist political theology of DEI is polluting our Medical Schools," said F. Murphy. "This divisive and anti scientific approach is going to lead to patient harm. Those who are directing this nonsense need to reverse course or resign."
Murphy's remarks were in response to an article by the Daily Wire, which detailed a report from Do No Harm. The report accuses the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) of politicizing the medical field through the promotion of DEI policies. It highlights how DEI has been incorporated into medical school programs, testing, and public policy, including racially-focused theories and transgender medical procedures for children.

In response to these concerns, Murphy has introduced the Embracing Anti-Discrimination, Unbiased Curricula, and Advancing Truth in Education (EDUCATE) Act. This legislation aims to eliminate DEI mandates in medical education by halting federal funding to institutions enforcing specific beliefs or racial discrimination. It also requires accreditation agencies to prevent DEI-related practices while allowing instruction on race-related health issues and research data collection without promoting discriminatory practices.
Murphy is serving his third term as the representative for North Carolina’s Third Congressional District, which encompasses much of Eastern North Carolina. He is a member of several committees including the House Ways and Means Committee, the House Veterans Affairs Committee, and the Committee on House Administration. Additionally, he co-chairs the House GOP Doctors Caucus. Murphy holds academic credentials from Davidson College and the University of North Carolina’s School of Medicine and is noted as the only practicing surgeon currently serving in Congress.
